Age of the national AI strategy
Calendar years since the national artificial intelligence strategy currently in force was published. The count returns to zero in the year a successor strategy is adopted, not the year it goes to public consultation.

METHOD NOTE
The value is the current calendar year minus the year in which the strategy in force was published. That strategy is the National Strategy for Artificial Intelligence, published in 2020 by what is now the Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy. A successor strategy running to 2032 was in public consultation on the review date. It had not been adopted, so it does not reset the figure. We count in whole calendar years because the sources we checked do not give the month of publication, and a figure to one decimal place would suggest precision we do not have.
REFERENCE BAND
We set the ceiling at ten years, by which point a strategy predates almost all of the technology it covers. The middle of the range matters more than either end, because a strategy published before large language models were generally available could not have planned for them.
